Soundscape – Installation @ Pallas Projects

Multi Speaker Installation

A six month artist lead project and installation at Pallas Projects Studios - 2014

The human mind, both conscious and subconscious, possesses a remarkable capacity to process and store auditory information. Our ability to recognize and recall a vast array of sounds, even when divorced from their origins, is a testament to our advanced cognitive evolution. This auditory processing continues even during sleep, with external sounds capable of altering dream narratives. Our unconscious mind perpetually records sonic data, forming the foundation of our auditory perception and interpretation of the world around us.

Soundscapes, an immersive installation, explores the intricate connections between sound memory, physical objects, and the listener. The exhibit is divided into two distinct experiences:

In the first gallery, a surround sound system comprising sixteen speakers envelops visitors in a dynamic soundscape. This setup transcends traditional stereo configurations, featuring a mix of natural (biophonic), environmental (geophonic), and human-made (anthropophonic) sounds. These audio elements move freely through the space, creating a fluid and immersive sonic environment that engages listeners from all directions.

The second gallery offers a more interactive experience, inviting visitors to become active participants in sound creation. Here, various wooden and metallic objects are amplified, allowing guests to generate their own unique sound textures. By interacting with these objects, visitors can explore the diverse acoustic properties of different materials, experiencing an enhanced tactile and auditory connection between themselves and the sound-producing objects.

Soundscape is an installation that explores the relationship between object, sound event, and listener.

TAPE WORKS FOR SIXTEEN SPEAKERS

16 re-used speaker cones, 16 microphone stands, 1 sub speaker, 100m of speaker cable, fallen leaves, MBP, Max MSP, UA Apollo,Motu mk2.

An array of sixteen speakers are arranged in a simple grid layout within a room. Sound events are sent to the speaker array, which are played back to the listener in either predetermined or random sequences. The dynamic movement of the sound events within the acoustic space removes them from the standard static stereo reproduction. Unpredictable sequences, variation in sequence speeds, and acoustic reflections from different surfaces give the sound events an organic poetic quality.

Amplified objects within the room allow the listener to experience physical surfaces sonically. The amplification of wood and metal reveal the subtle details in the composition of the material. The sensitivity of human skin on these surface textures is magnified by the amplified process. Complex sonic events form on touch with the slightest brush of your hand.
